Friday Forum Committee Seeks Volunteers

For 94 years, City Club Friday Forums have impacted Oregon’s public policy discussion. Now, the Friday Forum (FF) committee seeks volunteers to create Forums that will influence our region’s public affairs in the years to come. Volunteers work with key figures, from politicians to musicians, to illuminate the most critical issues facing our city and state.

Volunteer responsibilities include brainstorming and researching ideas and issues, finding speakers and coordinating logistics. Committee members should be dedicated to Club principles of non-partisanship and objectivity in the presentation of information and ideas. In order to reflect the larger Portland community, the committee seeks diversity in both its Forums and its members, and welcomes adults of all ages, races and political persuasions.

Interested? First round applications are due by Friday, August 27, after which the committee will accept applications on a rolling basis. Volunteers who apply by August 27 and are accepted onto the committee will have the unique opportunity to help write the election season debate questions, thereby directly impacting voters’ understanding of candidates and ballot measures.

Please submit your application to amy@pdxcityclub.org by August 27. If you have questions, please email or call 503-228-7231 x100.

Friday Forums, City Club's ongoing lunchtime lecture series, engage audiences in issues of significance, prominence, urgency and humanity. From speeches by government and community leaders, to panel discussions about health, arts, technology and more, Friday Forums give complex subjects relevance and clarity, and keep Oregonians informed about the most pressing issues of our time. City Club welcomes members and nonmembers to Friday Forums.

Friday Forums take a break during the summer and will be back September 10, 2010. Thanks for joining us for a great year of Forums!

At their best, partisanship and the two-party system allow people with competing goals to work more easily together: when sufficiently constrained, conflict between political parties can be informative and productive. Excessive partisanship, however, can undermine effective lawmak¬ing and interfere with the Legislature's ability to func¬tion. In today's political climate, excessive partisanship too often seems the rule rather than the exception - but this was not always the case.
