Join City Club for an interactive discussion exploring how Oregon can maximize its education funding to ensure academic excellence. At this fact-based forum, participants will gain a comprehensive overview of Oregon’s complex educational funding structure, and begin contemplating long-term, creative solutions.

A panel of education and economic experts will provide historical context and relevant data, will address the link between the strength of Oregon’s economy and the wellness of its public education system, and will outline new ideas from state leaders, which include:

  • Governor Kitzhaber’s recent announcement of the creation of an Investment Team, charged with designing the framework for an Oregon Education Investment Board that would oversee education for children from birth through college (cradle to career).
  • Senate Bill 242, which seeks to end the Oregon University System’s status as a state agency, giving it more independence in how it raises and spends money and runs its operations.

Panelists:

  • Whitney Grubbs, JD, education policy advisor, Office of the Governor,
  • John Tapogna, president - economic consulting, ECONorthwest
  • Joe Cortright, Chair of the Governor’s Council of Economic Advisors, Impresa Inc, chair
  • Brian Reeder, assistant superintendent of analysis and reporting, Oregon Department of Education
  • Facilitator: Pat Burk, associate professor of education leadership, Portland State University
