State of the City
Throughout Mayor Sam Adams' time in office, Portland has faced significant challenges, including a struggling economy, poor high school graduation rates and persistent inequality. There are, however, some signs of improvement. Unemployment rates in the Portland metro area have dropped below the national average and graduation rates within Portland Public Schools have risen five percent over the last year.
On March 2, in his final State of the City address, Mayor Sam Adams will discuss his efforts to tackle the key challenges facing Portland, while also identifying the work that remains to be done to boost job creation, improve educational outcomes and ensure equitable opportunity.
Sam Adams served for 11 years as Portland Mayor Vera Katz’s chief of staff before becoming a city comissioner. He was elected Mayor of Portland in 2008.
