Oregon's higher education system is seriously underfunded. To begin to address this issue, Governor Kitzhaber and the Oregon Legislature passed new legislation to create independent trustee boards at Oregon State University, Portland State University, and University of Oregon. This allows OSU, PSU and UO the autonomy to hire and fire presidents, set tuition and fees, and oversee operations individually, instead of being part of the Oregon Board of Higher Education. President Wim Wiewel of PSU, President Edward Ray of OSU and President Michael Gottfredson of UO will discuss their perspectives on the new board structure, new collaborations, and rebuilding higher education. They will shine a light on their respective schools regarding research, academics, innovation, and work force development potential under a bold reform that could allow competitiveness for funding to push higher education forward.
