Portland
's “Eat Local” Movement:
Shake the Hand that Feeds You!
The
term “locavore” (one who eats primarily locally grown/produced
food) has entered the everyday lexicon in Portland . Farmer's
Markets have exploded, with over 35 in the Portland metro region,
and another 50 throughout rural Oregon . Eating locally has gone
beyond “trend” status to a full-blown movement in Portland .
In
our globalized, big-box world, where do the local food movement,
the organic movement and sustainability intersect? Is buying most
of your food locally possible, or even financially practical?
And what is it about Portland that is making it a “foodie” center
of the world?
Join
City Club's New Leaders Council and Executive Chef Broc Willis
of Southpark for a provocative event focusing on Portland
's “Eat Local” movement. Participants will hear a brief history
of Portland 's farmers markets and hear from local farmers at
the market about the successes and challenges they face in making
a living. Participants will shop with Chef Willis for ingredients
and then walk to Southpark to enjoy a 3-course lunch
Chef Willis has made from these just-purchased items. Lunch will
include a lively discussion exploring the many aspects of the
local food phenomenon in Portland .
