City Club of Portland’s Built Environment Issue Committee recently partnered with the Architecture Foundation of Oregon (AFO) to host a community event focusing on middle-scale housing in Portland’s established neighborhoods. Over 30 attendees, including City Club and AFO members, as well as members of the public, joined the event, which was led by Rick Potestio, a 2018 Van Evera Bailey Fellow, and Jonathan Konkol, Co-Chair of our Issue Committees program.
Rick and Jonathan shared the findings of their three-year study, which focused on historic multifamily housing, neighborhood dynamics, and community planning. Their research led to the development of the Dynamic Density model, aimed at increasing housing density while preserving neighborhood character and involving residents in the planning process.
After the presentation, attendees participated in a hands-on workshop focused on adding different middle-scale housing types to Portland’s historic Irvington neighborhood. The workshop provided an opportunity for participants to explore how various housing types could fit into the neighborhood while addressing housing shortages and maintaining its unique character.
