About the Event

City Club’s New Leaders Council (NLC) invites anyone interested in getting more involved in civic life—and making friends along the way—to its monthly happy hour geared toward those in their 20s to 40s.  Next Up Action Fund is opening their office for an informal evening focused on young people and civic engagement in Oregon. Next Up is a non-profit whose work centers youth leadership, civic engagement, community organizing, and helping young people find ways to participate in social and political issues.  We’ll hear from Next Up’s Syd Abad and their team about the group’s work and current initiatives, opportunities to volunteer and get involved, and their own experiences organizing and building political power with young Oregonians.

Featured speaker Syd Abad has spent over a decade working campaigns and strategizing across local and national levels. At the ACLU, he advanced immigrant justice work across Oregon and New Mexico through facilitating Know Your Rights trainings, building strategic legislative communications, coordinating rapid response during federal enforcement actions, and developing a local governance training program from the ground up.
